Fit Over Fifty: Hitting the Start Button!

Becoming physically active is the best thing you can do for your health.  Exercise, good nutrition and sleep are key components to keep you independent mentally and physically.  Here are steps to take to get started on this Journey!

  • Talk to your doctor
  • Enlist the help of a Fitness Professional
  • Set Fitness Goals
  • Find support among family friends for encouragement or as an exercise partner
  • Purchase comfortable clothing and high-quality shoes
  • Start at an easy intensity doing activities that you enjoy

The CDC 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends two types of physical activity each week to improve health—aerobic and muscle-strengthening. Experts recommend that older adults engage in:

  • Moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week.
  • Muscle-strengthening activities for two or more days a week that work all major muscle groups.

At the Hartland Movement Center, Senior Specialist trainers, Mark and Karen are here to get you started and keep you motivated. Choose from 1 on 1 sessions or a workout with a small group of like-minded individuals. Contact us at info@hartlandmovmentcenter.com or reach our trainers directly:

What is the lymphatic system and why is it so important?

Hello! My name is Vicki Magnan, and I am honored to be a new member of the team at Hartland Movement Center. I am an Occupational Therapist and certified in lymphatic treatment, kinesiology taping and Healthy Steps (a lymphatic-stimulating movement-based program).  I bring to the center almost 30 years of experience as an OT, with focus on the treatment of acute and chronic swelling disorders. The treatment that I provide is based on the Vodder method, called Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). In addition to providing this unique lymphatic-stimulating manual treatment, I offer a wide range of compression garments for those with acute and chronic swelling disorders, and also for athletes. My passion is the education and holistic treatment of a very complex system, that often goes undiagnosed.

Golf “Find your swing signature” with your Natural Body Preferences

Aurelien Van Stichelen, Head of Hartland Movement Center Golf Programs, Biomechanics Preferences Analyst, Strength and Movement Specialist

Today, let’s talk Natural Body Preferences with 2 fundamentals in GOLF. Over the past years, I have been studying, learning and then teaching a new method developed in Europe. We are all unique and possess inner strength waiting to be awaken. I have always been coaching strength and movement with this idea to let the body free from too much guiding and thinking. Therefore, when I discovered the Natural Body Preferences, it was evidence to me that I will be certified then teach, spread, and share it.

INDOOR CYCLING

WHY GO INDOOR? By Cheryl Sinitz, Cycling Instructor at Hartland Movement Center.

Indoor cycling has benefits for all riders, not just elite athletes or racers. Sometimes getting “faster” is about fitness, weight loss, event preparation, and addressing strengths and weaknesses in our cycling. Having a structured indoor workout is the most time-efficient means to achieve your goals.

PILATES FOR CYCLISTS

by Linda Gilson, Pilates Instructor at Hartland Movement center.

When it comes to exercise, it goes without saying that riding your bike is a cyclist’s fitness passion. There are, however, big benefits for cyclists that make the time to incorporate alternative workouts off the bike, such as Pilates, into their regular routines.

MARTIAL ARTS PRACTICE

My name is Ian Jensen, and my passion for martial arts began at a young age although my formal training did not begin I was an adult.  Since that time, I have achieved a 5th Dan in Taekwondo, 1st Dan in Hapkido, and a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  I remain active in both training and in competition which I believe to be an important part of refining skills and continued improvement.  I have also earned certifications as a Stick Mobility Instructor, Russian Kettlebell Instructor, Club bell Yoga Instructor, and USCCA Defensive Pistol Instructor.  One lesson learned is that it is never too late to begin your self-improvement journey!

HOW OLD ARE YOU REALLY?

How old am I really? The calendar says I just turned 66, but how I feel and what I can still do compared to my peers points to a much younger age. The calendar doesn’t lie, however, to get the full story we need to understand our biological age. Also known as our physiological or functional age, biological age differs from chronological age because it takes into consideration a number of factors other than just the day you were born.
